Hey there!

Split ends don’t look neat and nice, do they? The problem is extremely common, affecting some people more than others. Is a haircut the only option? Not necessarily.

Damaged hair ends leave us with static, frizzy hair without resilience and shine. I never liked short hair and was afraid it was my only option. Split ends can’t be magically glued back together, despite cosmetic makers’ promises…

Causes of split ends

Hair consists of medulla, cortex and epidermal layer. Thin, dry hair has no medulla. The cuticle layer is meant for protection, and when it ‘s damaged, then hair starts splitting.

Mechanical damage – tugging and rubbing hair – is the most common cause of split ends. I used to make the same mistake and didn’t realize that wrong hair brushing technique causes damage to my hair. Even catching hair on a pillow or clothes may end up badly.

Still, heat has the most destructive effect on hairdos. Which is why I recommend putting away hair dryers, flat-irons and curling wands. Wet hair is the most likely to get hurt. If you can’t do without a dryer, then always set a cool airflow and don’t hold the nozzle too close to the scalp. Remember about heat protectants which prevent damage.

The lack of hydration and nutrients also worsen our hair. My color-treated hair is even more fragile. To make things worse, I used to comb it when it was wet, without any conditioner. Remember that hair needs a constant supply of hydrating and nourishing ingredients, especially colored hair.

An unhealthy diet also causes split ends and even splitting nails. You will never look good if you don’t eat a healthy diet. Remember about vitamins B, A and E. Supplements are important. Take zinc and iron regularly.

HAIR CARE is the priority

The well-suited hair care products are essential for fabulous hair. They will prevent hair damage in the future.

Remember to wash hair the right way. Do it gently, massaging the scalp with your fingertips. Such massage stimulates hair growth for stronger, healthier hair. Wrong hair washing leads to dry, damaged hair that breaks easily. First, mix your shampoo with some water, and then apply it on the scalp. And the key thing: wash only the scalp, not the lengths. The lather that runs down is more than enough to cleanse the hair. Use SLS shampoos only once a week; choose milder shampoos for everyday use.

Hair needs nourishing and hydrating after every washing routine so always apply a conditioner. Regular hair oil treatment and hair masks once a week work wonders too. Remember that unsuitable hair care products and bad diet result in weak hair which can only be revived with a haircut. It is better to prevent problems than be bothered by awful consequences.
